AbstractThe use of three-dimensional finite element methods eliminates the need to make the modeling simplifications necessary for two-dimensional analyses, but substantially increases computational cost. Increasingly sophisticated analysis techniques and improvements in computing hardware have made three-dimensional methods more attractive, but the need still exists to reduce the time required to perform these analyses. This thesis focuses on efficiently controlling discretization and geometric approximation errors in three-dimensional analyses in order to quickly produce accurate results.
