Title | Automated Capabilities for Analysis of Three Dimensional Elastomeric Seals |
Year | 1994 |
Abstract | This report documents the results of a project undertaken at the Scientific Computation Research Center (SCOREC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to provide FMC with automated capabilities for three dimensional analyses of elastomeric seals via the finite element method. The large amount of time required to generate finite element models with current tools and the possibility of introducing errors during this process makes automation of these analyses of crucial importance for their efficient application in a design environment. The automation of these analyses required the utilization of capabilities previously existing at SCOREC as well as the development of new capabilities specific to the needs of FMC. Ease of use and user friendliness of the developed capabilities were stressed in their design and implementation to facilitate incorporation at FMC. Both the existing capabilities and those developed for this project are discussed within the body of this report, though emphasis is placed on documentation of the newly developed capabilities. Note that the functionalities developed for this project, as well as the required functionalities previously existing at SCOREC, may be obtained for installation at FMC. The following sections of this report include an overview of the functionalities necessary for the automation of finite element analyses and detailed descriptions of the specific functionalities developed at SCOREC. The developed system is demonstrated on sample analyses, and recommendations for future development and enhancements are made. |
