TitleSpatial Modeling of Epidemics on Parallel Machines
Year1993
AbstractThe spatial and temporal aspects of epidemics, including vector-borne diseases in which a parasite spreads the pathogens, are pivotal to epidemiological ecology. We have implemented parallel simulation system for spatially explicit modeling of epidemics. The model behaves like a large probabilistic cellular automaton. Tightly synchronous transitions of local states executed at all cells (i.e. sites in the modeled habitat) make the simulation highly suitable for SIMD architecture implementations. Image processing algorithms are used to facilitate pattern detection and measurements. In this paper we discuss the parallel implementation of the model of epidemics. In particular, we describe main parallel algorithms used, analyze the performance of this implementation and interpret ecological significance of the simulation results.
