TitleCurvature Sensitive Refinement in 3D Automatic Mesh Generation

AbstractThe thesis presents an algorithm to control the gradation of the finite element meshes for 3D automatic mesh generators based on the surface curvature of the geometric model representing the problem domain. The algorithm utilizes pointwise curvature sampling on the model boundary through a well defined geometric operator which queries the geometric modeler for the principal curvatures and the principal directions. The refinement algorithm has been implemented and tested within the existing Finite Octree mesh generator. The thesis also presents two useful approaches to control mesh gradation based on curvature and presents example meshes to provide input for comparing the two approaches. The refinement algorithm has been found to be very useful specially for models with large curvature. The thesis also discusses the key issues involved with mesh based directional refinement. The concept of mesh alignment and size control along specified directions are considered. A potential algorithm for doing directional refinement by mesh edge based modifications is presented along with some preliminary results of its implementation.
