AbstractAn enhanced procedure is presented for the three-dimensional (3-D) finite element analysis of soft hydrated tissue layers, such as articular cartilage. This procedure is built from the following operations: (i) precise tissue layer geometry is obtained via stereophotogrammetry (SPG), (ii) a finite element mesh of tetrahedral elements is constructed using the Finite Octree automatic mesh generator, (iii) a 3-D, biphasic, mixed-penalty finite element analysis is performed to obtain the spatial and temporal response of the tissue and (iv) the solution fields of interest are studied using an advanced visualization program. We briefly describe each of these areas and illustrate the process using examples from the glenohumeral joint of the shoulder.
