Abstract | The variational multiscale model for large-eddy simulation, developped by Hughes, Mazzei and Jansen has recently been extended to real space calculations within the context of a hierarchical basis. Unique attributes of the formulation are that modeling is confined to the effet of a small-scale Reynolds stress, in contrast with classical LES in which the entire subgrid-scale stress is modeled. Here, we review some aspects of the modeling, briefly describe its extension for use with a hierarchical basis, and examine its performance on a canonical problem: decay of isotropic turbulence. |
