TitleLC3 Report: Analysis of Complex 3D Woven High Temperature Ceramic Composite Structures
Year1998
InstitutionRPI
AbstractThis report covers analysis results for the design of a low cost ceramic composite component to be tested on a gas turbine engine. The finite element method was used to determine stress distributions and deformations of three tail cone designs, and the linear elastic properties and stress distributions at the scale of the weave. The computational methods for modeling complex three dimensional woven structures are reviewed and software tools for automated model construction are described. The tools make use of image processing, geometric and attribute modeling, automated discretization, and efficient solvers. The discretization techniques control mesh periodicity and volume fraction errors of meshed constituents due to approximation of curved boundaries. The methods developed are applied to the given component and composite material designs, and the resulting color images and tabular property parameters are included.
